Bermuda: August 12, 1915 - May, 30, 1916
England: June 16, 1916 - August 13, 1916
Active Dates: November 1914 - August 1920
The 38th Battalion served in France and in Flanders with the 4th Canadian Division and the 12th Infantry Brigade from August 14th, 1916 until the armistice with Germany in 1918. The battalion was organized in Ottawa but recruited people from Brockville, Perth, Prescott, and Alexandria (Ottawa and Districts) or what is now known as Eastern Ontario. On May 30,1916 the 38th battalion soldiers travelled over to England aboard the Grampian disembarking in England on June 9, 1916. The battalion arrived in France on August 13, 1916, becoming part of the 4th Canadian Division. This part of the battalion as described above was only the part in which both Vincent, Harold and 957 other ranks they fought in. The 38th battalion was better known as "The Royal Ottawa's". The name of the 38th Canadian Infantry Battalion was later changed into "The Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa".
Training progressed in Ottawa and Barriefield until August 1915. The battalion sailed aboard the "S.S. Caledonian" on 8 August 1915 heading to Bermuda where they arrived four days later. Bermuda is where the battalion served garrison duty. The battalion was officially disbanded on 30 August 1920. Vincent was one of nearly 2000 soldiers whom suffered casualties, and Harold was one of the 800 who died during the fighting.
